Hello Georgia!

We have fallen in love with the beautiful forests and mountains of Georgia.

We have also been driven mad by the drivers who take crazy risks on the roads and have no respect for any of the traffic rules on the road.

Over taking on blind bends, speeding, drinking and driving, cars that must in no way be kept on the roads and the casualness by which they play games with death here has been shocking to us. The amusing parts could be said to be the caws that treat the road as their own and just sit, walk or graze by the sides of them. Dogs that run mad alongside the cars is just part of the show.

The roads we have driven, some have been a true off-road training program forced on me without asking for it!  The country is being made into a non-socialist post soviet and has a long way to go yet as . We have seen a lot of  European union projects being implemented here on the roads at least (they are marked by the signs around these areas)

People are friendly and welcoming when you get to know them although they are very conservative on the surface.

These may be the wrong impressions but these are mine as I have experienced them in the last two days.

There will be a lot more about Georgia here soon but as time is short and access to the net proves difficult at times this has to be it for now.georgia01

An incredible place in time as well as location… churches and houses in the carved out caves of volcanic mountains in South Turkey.
A breathtaking museum of roman mosaic we managed to get to yesterday afternoon after being told it may be closed for restoration.

The Komajian king played good politics by having the statues of both Persians and Romans' gods built on the highest mountain in his Kingdom. The sacrifice alter in front of these statues are now used as a helipad. One wonders who was more vain, those witnessing the sacrifices done or those now landing at this alter.

In the last few days we have been to the most eastern regions in North Turkey. We have experienced the highest, hottest, most dusty and also gorgeous views of this country. This is Mount Ararat!

Arguably one of the most visited monestaries in Turkey, Sumela. It was sadly just far too crowded by local visitors who were only interested in the walk about around it rather than the place itself.

Chronological mumble jumble

You might have been wondering what happened to us and questioning where we are. To start with the last bit, we are in Greece and have spent a lovely few days browsing through this delightful country with its scenic routes we preferred over the magnificent new motorways. People drive kinder than in Italy, it is all a bit more relaxed. We visited the Meteora, 6 of 20 still existing monastries on top of mountains, traveled to Thessaloniki and are now in Alexandroupouli. We’ll visit tonight and tomorrow and continue our travels to Turkey on Friday – Istanbul awaits us!

Although making notes, haven’t kept up the writing since we visited our dear friends in Cana, Tuscany, Italy. But more will come once wifi connection and choice to spend time behind the computer instead of resting, setting up the car/tent area, exploring the environment/city, etc.;).

Wandering!

Views from our friend's window....
View from our friend’s window….

We are in Cana, Roccalbegna to pay Fede and Phillip a visit in their ‘town house’ and ‘home on the hill’. The rain is following us, so a day of rest (i.e. doing laundry, finding out more about FB feeds into blog – and that this will not work for us as we do not have a public page -) and recovery from mosquito bites is a good thing.

Why Slovenia?

From the Dolomites in the north of Italy, it was a natural continuation of our journey. But then again, there were many more reasons: to experience its very friendly and helpful people, who spoke English well; calmer and less stressful driving (than in Italy); to tank up with cheaper fuel (than in Italy); to see gorgeous nature and scenic routes, rivers with water in them (opposite to Italy where the rivers are (nearly) dry) and to visit the country of our dear absent friends Mateja & Katarina.
* Dawitt-die Jause (www.dawit.it) coffee/lunchroom at the border from Italy to Slovenia and our meeting with an older Austrian couple. Coffee is half the price here to 15 min down the road in Austria where they live. Next to that it also tastes much better here! The place is family run, very welcoming, homely and clean. Delicious cheese and cold cuts and artisanal items for lunch or to take away (great gifts!).
* Radovljica: delayed lunch on a parking, which at the end of it had one bench overlooking a beautiful valley, well worth the wait.
* our meeting with the Belgian coupe in Radovljica while enjoying the view and absorbing their willing offering of information about the region and where to stay.
* Bohinjsko (lake) Jezero
* Ukanc
* the Czech university group on excursion, who kept our morals high by playing and singing Czech folk songs while it was the whole evening pouring down with heavy rain at the campsite.

The next day we continued our journey once the rain came pouring into the area again, not stopping unfortunately in Ljubljana, but moving on to Croatia in search for the sun.

Reasons enough to visit Slovenia and look back on a wonderful two days.

Blog versus FB

Dear Everyone,

It has been a challenge to get on Wifi and start ‘blogging’. Saeed with his new Samsung Galaxy S5 clicks and takes a photo, writes a few lines, uploads it and Facebook has a new post! When we are having this cup of coffee or glass of wine/pint of beer, it turns out too much work to take out the laptop and write something on the blog.
Up til now it has been too demanding to be blogging and I foresee that until we have truly found our rhythm, you might have to have a little more patience, unless you read Saeed’s FB posts;).
We will look into how to feed these FB uploads into our blog, which would make it easier for all of us.

If any of you has a three sentence manual how to feed FB posts into a WP blog, please let us know, then next time we’ll implement it so you all can see the lovely ‘dual camera’ taken pictures.

Thanks for sticking with us!

Warm regards,

S&Sx
